"Stranger" - S. Davies - The City at Night

---

It’s cold tonight, submerged in the pool of dim light under the street lamp. The cars are thundering past, sounds ebbing closer, growing as they turned the corner and then fading just as quickly… I watch them come and go, and I frown against the cold and the emptiness.
You weren't where you said you'd be.
I take a draught of the coffee that I had to get takeaway after I'd been loitering in our cafe for almost half an hour. It’s good, but strangely bitter. You've been ordering it for me for so long, maybe I forgot something- some extra piece of this formula for combining caffeine and heat. Hmm.
I guess this means we're over.
I take another sip, and my breath spirals out of me like cigarette fog, misting into the air before it disappears.
  Good riddance.
The heat of this coffee is fading.
